Death Becoming Less Taboo, but Many Families Avoid Talking About End-of-Life Care

Barbara Kearns

An outstanding resource on end of life issues. Barbara is the author of “Gone from My Sight,” a booklet that is an invaluable resource for the families of people who are dying. She has written many other books, a blog, and a film.

Brené Brown

Brené is an inspiring speaker, writer, and researcher who has exposed the powerful and damaging impact that shame has on our lives. Her TED talks on shame and vulnerability are worth watching many times! Her initial TED-X talk has been viewed by over three and a half million people! She’s also funny, self-deprecating, and a proud Texan!

Pema Chodron
Pema Chodron is a Buddhist nun, a wise woman, and a fabulous companion during difficult times. I used to say that I had the tape of “When Things Fall Apart” on continuous look when my father was dying. I would fall asleep listening to Pema, waken at 3 in the morning in a cold sweat terrified by all that I had to deal with, and then soothe myself back to sleep listening to her again.

My two favourites are:

Harold and Maude
A classic (and my favourite movie of all time!)
A remarkable woman, about to turn 80, teaches a quirky, funeral-loving young man the meaning of living in every moment. Great soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

On Golden Pond
Who can resist Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda facing off against the vagaries and indignities of aging! This movie was made shortly before Fonda’s death and it speaks volumes about what it feels like to go kicking and screaming into old age.
